Behind the iron gate on Main Street in Santa Monica is a tiny club with a different flavor, a dark and shadowy red space where L.A.'s Eastside and Westside intersect for a rare energetic social experience. The underground Barcopa is easy to miss. There's no sign outside, no industry advertising, nothing to attract attention except for the warmth inside, especially on Mondays. The club's "Salsa" night draws an ethnic and geographically diverse crowd, prepared to dance late on a school night with its young, hot, world class instructor Cristian Oviedo and the infectious Latin sounds of DJ Charlie. "The moment you enter Barcopa on a Monday night, there is a feeling that you've been transported to Puerto Rico or maybe New York during the Mambo 70's" says Dr. Rumba the club Promoter "It has a very authentic, old school Salsa flavor that you don't get at the larger Salsa venues." The music, thanks to Salsero, Timbalero, Singer and DJ Charlie Antillon, ranges from classic Salsa to Cuban Rumba to N.Y. Mambo, Bachata and even a little Cha Cha. "I like the fact that we can play diverse music for a diverse dancing crowd," says the 34-year-old DJ, who has been spinning in L.A. for more than a 6 years. "The people who come here know they will either get something they haven't heard in a very long time or something they've never heard before." Owner Ashley Joyce, also a partner in the Room in Hollywood and the Room in Santa Monica, said the look and name of the 120-capacity bar was inspired by a trip he took to the Riviera Hotel in Havana, Cuba.
