Japanese Weekend Maternity owner/designer Barbie White majored in dance at the University of Oregon. After moving to San Francisco in the mid-seventies, she founded Oblong Rhonda, an urban modern dance company. Japanese Weekend was named after a dance performance choreographed by Barbie in the late seventies. White's experience with dance has aided her ability to design for the moving, changing body. Japanese Weekend Maternity is at the forefront of the maternity clothing revolution. The company has patented several designs that are innovative and fashionable, which include the Ok Support Waistband, The hug Line, and the one-of-a kind MamaCoat.
