Stephanie James Couture began as a result of Stephanie's own exhausting search for her own wedding gown. Stephanie James Couture explodes onto the scene, challenging tradition, on a quest to provide a look for the adventurous bride who is seeking something truly different.
After my first visit at Stephanie Kennedy's salon in Huntington Beach I am convinced that this is where I want my dress made. Ms. James custom designs dresses to fit your frame and since I'm only 5'1" and busty I am difficult to fit. She was so kind and really took the time to help me try on some of her designs. If you appreciate quality laces, silks, and other fabrics and love a unique vintage style this is for you. I am so excited about ordering my special dress I can hardly wait. Now I just have to make up my mind which one I like best which is hard to do since I love them all. The dress called Roxanne is beautiful, but Josephine and Audrey are also gorgeous. I have admired her work and seen these dresses in Modern Bride and other websites which inspired me to sneak over to her salon and try on the gowns. I had such a good time and would highly recommend that you go to her salon and try on some of her dresses. You would not be sorry the services are first rate!

I will give 2 stars. Because I feel for some unexplainable reason some force was against me having my dream dress completed on time by Stephanie. And since then her dresses do look better on brides than the one she made me did.
It was less than a week before my wedding and I had to beg her assistant to let me in to try my dress on. It was Halloween when I wanted to come in and her assistant told me "Stephanie won't be in because it's a holiday."
I said "What holiday? I have a kid who wants to trick-or-treat too but Im getting married this Sat. " They wanted me to come in the night before (Friday) to try it on. At this point I still had not seen the bodice and skirt put together. She finally agreed to see me the next day...But then Stephanie called me a few hours before I was to go in and try it on to see what color tulling I wanted...my wedding was only 5 days away and these were things I had already discussed with her 6 months prior. I was a little panicky but thought, it is going to be so awesome just stay calm.
When I first ordered my dress and got sized it was done before the store opened in HB and before she had this assistant (i think). As my date approached I was always talking to her assistant who I was having to relay everything I had decided ahead of time to. It was like they couldn't find anything on my dress. Or my sizing. Or, obviously the color I wanted. I could go on. And, I will...
What bums me out the most is I have seen the dress I was supposed to have since then, and it does look so adorable and well made...it just didn't happen for me. I walked away because things were put on me like it was my fault. Like at the final fitting on that dreaded Tues. - Halloween - The dress was way too big and she said, "Well didn't she (assistant) just measure you with the bodice?" and, why, yes she did so I don't know why it did not fit. Plus the bra she (assistant, again) told me to get was a very specific bra to buy that would go with the dress but it showed in the back so I was told to pin it down. And the tulling was so flat and did not have the fullness or bounce it was suppose to have. I guess that is what happens when you try to make a full skirt with tulling just a couple of hours before your client comes in. You could see the seams.
I don't doubt she is talented. Or that her dresses are adorable. But the lack of professionalism was so poor from the miscommunication to the to the poor "thrown together" quality.
At the end of it all I just left. And when Stephanie asked me , "When did you change the date to your wedding?" It just sort of sunk in that I came in too early in her establishing a business to get the dress I wanted. I guess if her new assistant wrote things down for her, or she took charge of it all herself this would have been cleared up months ago.
I do wish her luck. I guess I just wish I had got the dress that she has beautifully completed for all those other brides.
In the early 90's when you made your mom's georgeous wedding dress in like a week or two before the wedding, everyone knew you had talent, so its not surprising how far you've come and Im sure you will have many more success stories in your future.
Also your boutique in HB is awesome!!
I have always amired your talet- you make your Mother very proud. I follow you though her eyes and she has every right to be proud, you are terrific !!! Good luck with all your adventures

Stephanie James dresses are a godsend! When I was planning my wedding, I was very frustrated with the dress-buying process because I didn't want to look like a "normal" bride, but I couldn't find anything vintage that was just what I wanted. Then I went to the Stephanie James boutique and found exactly what I was looking for. Not only that, but she can make the dresses in a variety of fabrics and colors. I ended up with the "Lizzie" dress and it was so amazing, I cried the day AFTER my wedding because I was never going to get to wear my dress again! Oh and I also loved the selection of accessories. Instead of a veil, I found a cute feathery thing for my hair. I loved everything about my 'bridal look' thanks to Stephanie!
What a beautiful dress maker and person she is, she is a true delight to work with and one of the nicest people in the world. Her designs are innovative and fresh, you must see !

My wife always amazes me with her dresses. To think it all started at our wedding. She blew me away when she came down the aisle in the first Stephanie James dress. Here we are 3 years later and she has an amazing collection of dresses that are being sold all across the country.
